Aims, contents and method of the course

Goals: gaining a structured overview of the specific urban development processes in SEE.
Competences to be achieved: knowledge about specific development paths in SEE. Critical reflexion of dominant theories on urban spaces from the viewpoint of the periphery.
Focusing on SEE cities, the historical framings will be elaborated, as well as the specificities of urban development under socialism, as well as the multiple transformations since the 1990s.
The lecture cum assignments has two sections:
(1) general sections, introducing the specificities of SEE, the historical city of the 19th and early 20th century, the socialist and the post-socialist city. In this section, the concept of peripheralization and its impact on urban development will be debated as well.
(2) Current challenges of urban development: investor-led urban development, especially mean-projects and gated communities, informal vs. controlled suburbanization/urban sprawl, urban infrastructure, brownfield conversion, transformation into a service economy.
Methods: each unit consists of a lecture session and a session for debate, in which selected readings (to be read before) will be discussed.

Assessment and permitted materials

Presence and active participation, obligatory readings, participation in class debates, delivery of a written paper reflecting content of lectures, readings and debates

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

minimal requirement: presence in class and pro-active participation in at least 9 of the 11 units. Grading based on 50% participation, and 50% written paper
