Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
High resolution, threedimensional laserscan data of the earth surface has revolutionized the geosciences in the last decade. A modern physical geography is unthinkable without detailed terrain models. This course gives an overview of the potential fields of application. Short theoretical introductions are followed by an emphasis on hands-on tasks. Typical fields of application cover monitoring activities of environmental processes (e.g. landslides, glaciers), extraction of land surface parameters, characterization of vegetation.
Assessment and permitted materials
Each participant is asked to read literature either provided by the lecturer or from own research. At the beginning of each class there will be an open discussion round where everyone is asked to participate with their newly gained knowledge. Further the participants will group up for work assignments that require documentation. By the end we aim at creating a sound and properly referenced article for Wikipedia.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
By the end of this course each participant should be able to conduct their own laserscanning campaigns. During a 1-day field trip to Gresten/Lower Austria everyone get the chance to operate a terrestrial laserscanner on their own. Far more time is required for the post processing tasks that involve all steps from data filtering, registration of the data, georeferencing and finally generating ready to use products (digital terrain and surface models, volume calculation, topographic cross sections, etc.). Additionally participants will get to know the handling of a Wiki as a means of modern documentation and distribution of knowledge.
