Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The attractiveness of cities as places to live and work remains unbroken. Although a revival of the rural has been propagated from many sides due to the corona pandemic, it is still the cities and urban environs that are gaining residents. Urban planners are challenged by the population growth in cities: with the provision of living space, but also with the allocation of usable areas for other needs (work, mobility, recreation, culture, and art). In recent years, certain urban development issues have emerged in Austrian cities: The creation of affordable living space, the provision of space for a productive city, as well as the keeping of spaces free for recreational purposes. Last but not least, current measures to mitigate the challenges posed by climate change, as well as sustainable and intelligent urban development, have gained enormous importance.
The excursion shows via a comparative perspective which similarities and differences there are in spatial and urban development in the two Austrian cities. In addition, the approaches of urban planning to current challenges are examined: Which measures and strategies are the two cities pursuing? How important are different topics? How is urban planning anchored institutionally? Which actors are involved in the development and planning of cities?

Assessment and permitted materials

At the beginning of the course, the students get an insight into the performance assessment. In addition to being present and working in the preparatory units and during the excursion, there will be central duties: before the first appointment, a short preparatory task will have to be done(padlet entry on "Current topics in urban development"). Based on this, topics are selected and worked on in group work. The preparatory task serves the thematic discussion and development of previous knowledge, even before the start of the excursion. Students approach selected topics of urban planning and urban development (e.g. affordable housing, productive city, public space, etc.) and present them from a comparative perspective. The first results will be presented in the preparatory seminar. The contents of the excursion lead to an exemplification of topics and will hold ready in-depth knowledge, which is summarized in a poster after the excursion. In addition, each student will process the impressions gained in a short report (blog post based on impressions and sources, incl. (own) illustrations). The most important findings on the comparison of current topics of urban development and planning in Vienna and Innsbruck will be presented both, (a) 'live' as part of a poster presentation in mid-May, after the end of the excursion, and (b) digitally (blog posts).
