Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The main targets of the course are the introduction of population geography and the related demographic issues through the use of international sources of population data (mainly DHS -Demographic and Health Surveys) and the measurement of population characteristics and change ( such as age, sex, fertility, mortality, health, social structure, …).
DHS are nationally- representative household surveys that provide data for a wide range of monitoring and impact evaluation indicators in the areas of population, health, and nutrition. DHS data set appears then as the core of quantitative materials to describe and assess population and health issues in over 90 developing countries.

The data will be used to understand, reproduce and interpret the quantitative analyses of population assessment. The analyses will be carried out with the Excel program.

Assessment and permitted materials

Analyzing of population data sets and understanding of key demographic aspects.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Along the semester, the following is obligatory for graduation:
(i) Regular attendance and session preparation (10%)
(ii) Positive assessment of the Multiple Choice test (40%)
(iii) Positive assessment of the practical test (50%) (population data assessment with interpretation of the analysis outputs carried out with datasets similar to those used during the exercises).

Examination topics

Attendance is compulsory. Exercises with Excel following the different themes result in active weekly preparation (the students prepare independently the session by reproducing the statistical procedure in Excel and reading and analyzing the scientific articles linked to the topic under consideration.
Examinations on the theoretical and technical aspects of population assessment.

Reading list

A script and a reading list will be provided by the teacher for the course.
