Aims, contents and method of the course

The focus of this excursion is to address themes in the combination of Physical and Human Geography. At single locations on the South and North Island, relevant themes will be introduced and discussed. The themes include the settlement area (Maoris, European settlers), enegry and water ressouces, economy, environmental protection, plate tectonics, Environmental and Climate Change (El Nino, sea level rise), vegetation history and natural hazards (e.g. landslides, earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis) - discussed in the frame of past develepoments, current situation and potential scenarios. Experts from National, regional and city councils, private companies, universities and other governmental institutions will welcome us, discuss various issues and guide is at specific points of interest. Additionally it is planned to tramp high mountain tracks.
Route: Christchurch - Alexandria - Mount Cook - Wanaka - Westcoast - Blenhem - Wellington - Palmerstone North - Lake Taupo - Napier - Auckland
