Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Starting with general discussions and concepts of urbanism and urbanization, these will be applied to understand empirical processes in cities in Southeast Asia. The lecture will combine the discussion of the "social production of space" with the analysis of real processes in cities like the creation of localities, conflicts between urban planning and self-organisation, urban symbolism and state ideologies and forms of domination, the role of cities for development of the countries and finally the local effects of the global urban system.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students are acquainted with current concepts and methods of urban research and how these are applied for the analysis of empirical processes in cities of Southeast Asia.
Examination topics
Lecture with presentations and depending on the number of participants discussions.
