    Aims, contents and method of the course

    The primary aims of the seminar consist in (i) the consolidation, (ii) the ability to combine and (iii) the ability to evaluate the societal relevance of the knowledge obtained through the introductory lectures in Physical geography, (iv) learning how to scrutinize statements, (v) internalizing the clear distinction between description and interpretation, and (vi) refining the participants' skills in scientific presentation and writing. In this sense, participants will elaborate on selected topics, solitary or in groups. Thereby a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary, applied problems will be employed in order to foster systemic and integrative ways of thinking. Learning methods are in particular:
    (1) Analysis of scientific publications
    (2) Writing of a seminar essay
    Course languages are German and English. Active and passive oral and writing skills in both languages are expected from all participants.

    Assessment and permitted materials

    Active participation 10%, presentation with 10% overheads and 30% oral talk, written thesis 50%,

    Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

    (a) Ability to combine various aspects of Physical geography
    (b) Ability to critically reflect scientific statements
    (c) Ability to evaluate the societal relevance of various aspects of Physical geography
    (d) Ability to clearly distinguish between observation and interpretation
    (e) Ability to present complex contents in a scientifically consistent way in both oral and written form
