Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar explores the term ‘global urban majority’ to focus on those places, people and practices that play a critical role in urbanisation processes but receive little or insufficient attention in academia. At the same time, the concepts of global majorities and minorities enable a critical engagemnet with power relations and norms, as well as opening up possibilities for alternative perspectives.

Urban development ‘for and with’ the global majority means that this seminar pays particular attention to the role of civil society organisations and social movements, to knowledge co-production and so-called ‘people-centred approaches’.

At the end of the seminar you will be able to:
- Apply core concepts of urban studies in relation to global majorities to a) critically reflect on blind spots and their significance in different urban development approaches and b) identify alternatives.
- Analyse places, practices and urban actors using insights from comparative urbanism and evaluate their structural significance for different topics of urban development.

Methods:
In the course, core concepts are presented, contextualised and discussed using concrete examples and cities. Weekly tasks based on literature, podcasts, videos and your own research will be set. You are explicitly encouraged to contribute your own case studies, experiences and interests to shape the course.

The course will be held in German. Please note that the majority of the literature is in English and that parts of the course (e.g. guest lectures) may also be held in English.

Assessment and permitted materials

This course is based on continous assessment. A prerequisite for positive completion is full participation in at least 80% of the seminar dates. Furthermore, attendance in the first unit is mandatory; registered participants who are absent will be de-registered.
