Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Subject of the seminar is the investigation of spatial development processes at the edge of cities. After a review of relevant analytical and planning-related concepts like Suburbia, ‘Zwischenstadt’ (‘In-Between-City’), Edge City, Smart City etc. current developments on the outskirts of Vienna will be described, analysed and assessed from a planning point of view.
Language of instruction: German.

Assessment and permitted materials

The assessment of students’ achievements is based on oral presentations and written reports, especially on the final reports.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

By own efforts the students become acquainted with the context of discovery and the context of justification of an empirical research process. This is about operationalizing a problem, planning and conducting empirical work and finally summarizing and presenting the results. Theoretical as well as methodical competences are imparted.

Examination topics

Small groups of students undergo a research process starting with the problem definition and continuing with the theoretical embedding and the empirical work up to the presentation and discussion of results. Thus a variety of methods is deployed. Emphasis is put on an independent elaboration of a self-chosen research question.
