Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is split in two parts. One third of the course is dedicated to theoretical basics of the techniques of map making, map publishing and (offset) printing: Basics (technical terms, definitions), Graphic file formats, Typography, Theory of colours, Special Software for cartographers. This part is a lecture with examples from professional practice.
The other two thirds comprise of practice lessons. The practical lessons deal with map creation, from data collection via data preparation with GIS to the final polish with vector graphic software. (Adobe Illustrator)
This course is held in German.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment takes place in three parts. One part is an exam on the lecture part of the course (written or orally, by arrangement). Furthermore, the practical part comprises smaller practical exercises during the semester and one project at the end of the course. The aim of the project is to create a small map.
Contribution to the final assessment: exam: 35%, exercises 30%, project: 35%

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course requires basic knowledge about cartography and GIS. (Contents of the corresponding bachelor courses, especially VU Topographische Kartographie und VU Thematische Kartographie)
Completion of the above mentioned parts of the assessment as well as the attendance during the course are the minimum requirements to pass the course.
The course is held in German.

Examination topics

Exam: topics of the lecture (Basics, Graphic file formats, Typography, Theory of colours, Special Software for cartographers)
Practical exercises and project: data acquisition, data preparation, application of graphics software

Reading list

Das Skriptum zum theoretischen Teil wird über Moodle bereitgestellt.
Zum Übungsteil gibt es ein ergänzendes Skriptum, zur Software Adobe Illustrator finden sich zudem sehr viele Tutorien und Anleitungen im Internet.
Als Ergänzung / Auffrischung können Skripten und Folien zu den Lehrveranstaltungen aus dem Bachelor-Studium Geographie verwendet werden.
