Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Qualitative research methods have always had a role of their own in the social sciences and also in thematic fields of vulnerability and migration research. In recent years, on the one hand, the ”traditional” divide between qualitative and quantitative methods has narrowed (and a tendency towards mixed-methods research designs is observable), while on the other hand, qualitative research is increasingly acknowledged in more quantitative domains such as climate (impact) research. In human-environment research and in the nexus of migration and environmental change, qualitative methods and their professional implementation are therefore becoming more important.
The aim of the course is for participants to gain a comprehensive understanding of qualitative research in the context of migration and environmental change. This includes knowledge of basic paradigms, research designs and approaches; an overview of important qualitative methods for data collection and analysis; in-depth knowledge of individual, selected methods; and applicable knowledge of how to combine individual methods meaningfully in a research design.
In detail, after attending the course, participants should:
- have an overview of the range of different qualitative methods of data collection and data analysis;
- understand the advantages and disadvantages of individual methods and what is particularly important when using them;
- have basic knowledge of how different methods (qualitative, but also in combination with quantitative) can be usefully combined;
- be able to develop a meaningful combination of research question, methods of data collection and analysis as well as knowledge generation on a given topic.

The event will consist of lecturer inputs, participant contributions and interactive group work. Participants will work individually and in groups on methodologies based on use cases in the environmental migration field and develop a research design under guidance.

Assessment and permitted materials

- Participation in at least 80 percent of the seminar sessions. In the case of illnesses, which are proven with a medical certificate, or in the case of other justified absences, absences in excess of this can be compensated for by additional written assignments;
- Oral presentation (15 mins) and a written short profile (1 pages) of one method & paper, based on literature research;
- Paper & method reflections: reading of the key paper and 1 method paper / chapter and submission of a written reflection on these for all sessions;
- Individual draft of a research design for a real (e.g. Master thesis) or fictitious project (written, 10 pages, at the end of the course, due 31.07.2023)
Grading: presentations: 30%, written elaboration of a research design: 70% of the grade.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participation in at least 80 percent of the seminar sessions. In the case of illnesses, which are proven with a medical certificate, or in the case of other justified absences, absences in excess of this can be compensated for by additional written assignments.

The presentation of the methods and the written elaboration of a research design each count for 50 percent of the grade. Both partial performances must be passed independently of each other for a positive final assessment. The performances are passed if they have been assessed with at least the grade 4.
Grading key:
100 - 86 % - Grade 1
85 - 71 % - Grade 2
70 - 56 % - Grade 3
55 - 41 % - Grade 4
40 - 0 % - Grade 5
A grading scale for the written assignments can be viewed on Moodle and will be explained separately in the seminar.

Examination topics

The examination material includes the analysis, presentation and discussion of relevant literature and documents on the topic, the independent research of sources and materials, the presentation of these work results and their written elaboration.
