Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims: Students gain insight into central concepts used and central topics examined in human geography. They are able to evaluate distinct social problems with regard to their spatial interdependencies.

Content: Discussion of significant transformations in thinking about and dealing with central topics in human geography in relation to the disciplinary development. Basic terms and concepts used in different subfields of human geography are exemplified.

Content Outline: Orientation in the study programmes (2 lectures), introduction to human geography (1 lecture), introduction to social geography (1 lecture), introduction to urban geography (2 lectures), introduction to cultural and political geography (2 lectures), introduction to population geography and migration (2 lectures), introduction to development and space (1 lecture), introduction to the interrelation of men and environment (1 lecture), introduction to economic geography (2 lectures),

Method: Lecture; discussion forum; voluntary preparation and wrap-up assignments

For students in the master's program Geography: Global Change and Sustainability who have to take the exam as stipulations with admission a reading list in English is provided.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written test with multiple choice questions as part of the module exam of the orientation phase.

For students in the bachelor’s programme in Geography module exam in combination with a test on the content of VO Introduction to Human Geography II.

For students in the teacher’s education bachelor programme Geography and Economics module exam in combination with a test on the content of VO Introductory Course: Basics in Economics.

All students in the master's program Geography: Global Change and Sustainability have to do an English exam which is based on the English reading list.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Single Exam: Minimum of 25 (out of 50) points.
Module Exam: Minimum of 20 (out of 50) points for each part of the modul exam and a minimum of 50 (out of 100) for modul exam in total.

Examination topics

Basic Reading and lecture material including discussions.
Presentation and discussion material is provided via the elearning platform.

The English version of the exam (offered for students in the master's program Geography only) is based on the English reading list.
