Aims, contents and method of the course

Content: Introduction to scientific work in human geography
Part 1. How to do research in Geography
Part 2. References and the use of literature
Part 3. Data collection
Part 4. Data analysis
Part 5. Writing scientific texts

Aims: Students are able to draft geographic research questions and related hypotheses. They are familiar with different options of literature search and data sources. They are able to use and cite literature correctly. They are familiar with different methods of data collections and are able to amplify basic aspects one has to consider in empirical work. They are able to prepare a research plan with adequate data collection and evaluation methods for a given research question. They are familiar with basic rules for sample design. They are familiar with basic methods of analyzing texts and are able to apply them on small example texts. They are familiar with basic rules one has to consider in writing scientific texts.

Method: Lecture with flipped classroom elements, i.e. preparatory and integrated activities to support learning processes.

Assessment and permitted materials

(planned): Final exam will be held as Multiple-Choice-Test. Extra credits for optional exercises during the semester. Calculator (no handy, no tablet) permitted during final exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum 51 points (out of 100) for final exam.
With extra credits for optional exercises: Minimum 46 points for final exam, in total minimum 51 points.
