Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The New Economy is changing work and employment relations fundamentally. As paid work is still a decisive mode of integration in our society, an important part of economic education is to prepare secondary school students for these new work-life conditions. A critical, didactical discussion of the foundations and problems characterising current as well as future work-based societies is the key objective of this seminar.
Further goals related to this subject are:
• Developing expertise on the subject through relevant literature.
• Studying and evaluating case studies on connecting economical, societal and political learning.
• Relating basic concepts identified in the new curriculum for geography and economics (academic secondary school, upper level) to the changes happening in work-based societies, e.g.: work/production/consumption, interests/conflicts/power, markets/regulations and deregulations, growth/crisis and contingencies.
• Designing, reflecting on and assessing competence-oriented teaching and learning arrangements on the subject.
Specific topics:
• Work and individual integration in society
• Work-organisation in the New Economy
• Features of such a new work-society from the perspectives of the employees and the employers respectively
• The role of unions and organised labour in the New Economy (focusing on Europe)
• Shaping labour through political processes
Methods:
- Reading and reflecting the compulsory literature
- Presentations by the lecturer
- Individual and group assignments (different formats)
- Discussions
- Expert interviews
- Developing and presenting a full (group-)assignment on a partial aspect of the class

Assessment and permitted materials

Course with continuous assessment of students' performance, which is based on active participation during lessons (reading of compulsory texts, assignments, discussion rounds, etc.) and the preparation of teaching units as a final thesis made in partner work
