Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Qualitative methods are an integral part of the method mix in geography. The course "Conducting and Analyzing Qualitative Interviews" serves to get an advanced insight in how to gather empirical qualitative data from interviews. In the course (a) various forms of qualitative interviews are presented using selected literature, (b) different types of interviews are practiced, (c) and the method of qualitative interviews is discussed. The course enables students to independently initiate and carry out qualitative interviews, e.g. for their theses. As part of the exercise, the students will independently conduct, transcribe and analyze two interviews. In terms of research-oriented teaching, the course is based on a current thematic focus and research project. The students will conduct interviews on changed residential location preferences in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The different methodological approaches are not only learned, but also reflected extensively. Basics of philosophy of sciences will be introduced. Further, practical advice (initiation of interviews, transcription, etc.) will be given in the course. The thematic insights gained from the interviews conducted by the students will further be synthesized, for a thematic learning.
