Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The current challenges of cities require solutions to real-world problems that are based on new forms of knowledge. Here, transdisciplinary and transformative research approaches play an important role, in which urban actors (such as representatives of city administrations, implementation practice and civil society) are included in the research process. Together, concrete solutions are tested and transformative changes towards sustainability are advanced. The course will focus on urban real world living labs as a setting for transdisciplinary and transformative research.
Theoretical and methodological approaches of transdisciplinary and transformative research are presented and discussed in the context of urban sustainability transformations. The students get to know the (ideal-typical) process of urban real world living labs and reflect on it critically. The aim is to transfer the theoretical and methodological approaches of transdisciplinary and transformative research into students‘urban real world living lab in the course of the semester (topics are proposed by the students and jointly determined). Through learning-by-doing, students gain knowledge about the benefits and challenges of transdisciplinary and transformative research. Role plays are also used in the process. Methods of transdisciplinary and transformative research are collected in a method pool and further deepened by the students.
Thus, the course provides students with theories and methods as well as key competences of transdisciplinary and transformative sustainability research (systemic thinking, strategic, normative, interpersonal competences) in the urban system, which are compiled as a joint outcome at the end of the semester.

Assessment and permitted materials

The course contains several exercise elements that are part of the assessment. These include:
a) Preparation, implementation, follow-up of various elements/methods of transdisciplinary and transformative research.
b) Development, presentation and, also testing of a concept for an urban real world living lab
c) Evaluation of the urban real world living lab from a retrospective perspective (own observation)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For the successful completion of the course, the following tasks must be completed:
- Carrying out all exercises and presenting the (interim) results (orally/written), as well as contributing to the Joint Outcome.
- Development and, if necessary, implementation of a urban real world living lab (active participation, group work, application of various methods, presentation, research diary)
- Writing a concept paper for an urban real world living lab (final report, research diary)

Examination topics

Active participation in all exercises and the urban real world living lab (70%), writing a final report (30%).
For a positive final assessment, the final report must be passed. A positive final assessment will only be given if all minimum requirements have been met.
