Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The excursion is to demonstrate that the coastal belt of the eastern Adriatic and its near hinterland differ significantly in cultural-geographical terms. While the coastal belt has been shaped by Venetian and Mediterranean influences, further in the North a Central European, further in the South a Southeast Europan (Balkanic) hinterland extends behind the coastal ranges and gorges. It documents distinct Byzantine and Ottoman cultural traces. Apart from this main theme reference will also be made to the instensive summer tourism and leisure landscape along the coast and on the islands, to transformation and identity problems of the post-Yugoslavian states as well as to the impressive natural landscape. Preliminary travel route: Vienna - Opatija - Zadar - Split - Metkovic - Mostar - Dubrovnik - Kotor - Cetinje - Budva - Ulcinj (ev. Shkodra, Albania) back to Vienna via the Croatian motorways.
