Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is designed for TA students in their third semester. Main targets are the mediation of basic statistical concepts and analytical tools, the acquirement of practical knowledge in handling the statistical program SPSS, the exercising of the translation of empirical questions into statistical analyses and the training of the interpretation of results.
The course will take place in the computer training classroom. Attendance is compulsory. All analytical work steps and procedures will be exercised jointly at the computer with real regional and survey data from Austria. A detailed manual will be provided to support individual pacing of learning processes.
The course will be organised in four thematical blocs: (1) regional statistics and indices; (2) statistical analysis of regional variations, correlations and dynamics, (3) statistical analysis of metric survey data, (4) statistical analysis of categorical survey data. Students will have to do excercises in statistical analysis and interpretation on their own related to each of these blocs. Two tutors will provide help. Excercises will be corrected and problems and results will be discussed jointly.
