Teaching/learning design:
In the practical part of the course, students work on specific practical projects or start-up ideas. Students are supported by mentors or start-up coaches in so-called coaching sessions. These coaching sessions take place at least twice a semester. In the service learning track, regular meetings are also held with the respective practice partners. The meetings are arranged individually and as required. The practical part of the course requires self-discipline, commitment, good project management, fair teamwork and continuity from the students. They have the opportunity to develop their projects creatively, pursue their own ideas, work critically and value-based to develop solutions for current challenges.
The theoretical part of the course takes place during teaching conferences and in supervised project work. The teaching conference in the winter semester is held in the format of team teaching. This means that two universities will join forces and focus on an interdisciplinary topic related to the Sustainable Development Goals and current issues. Students will be informed of the content and method as soon as the lecturers have agreed on this. The supervised project work is part of the start-up track and will take place approximately every 3 weeks. The coaches will meet with all participants in the track and work on the individual steps towards a business model. The formats are varied and will include group work, presentations, pitches and feedback rounds.

The content of the course relates to ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’ - the UN´s global sustainability goals, which individual course units as well as the project will relate to. Different disciplines and perspectives will be represented in this course. The lecturers come from different subject areas, such as sociology, spatial planning, architecture, music pedagogy, ecological economics, systems research and climate research, and participants are students from different study programmes and universities.
This interdisciplinarity set-up enables an important range of topics to be covered to address the SDGs. Cross-connections to almost all curricula can be found considering that sustainability affects many areas of our social and professional lives. Together, we want to develop solutions for local and global socio-ecological challenges, which necessitates different disciplines, perspectives and experiences coming together. The specific topics of the teaching conference will be determined by the teachers ahead of the start of the semester, as we will wait to see which project questions will be included in the new year and which disciplines will teach together in team teaching.Learning outcomes:
The course is designed to enable and encourage students to approach individual projects in a solution-orientated manner and with a focus on a sustainable way of life and the economy. Above all, design and action skills are promoted. Students will work independently on topics that are relevant to them, discuss them critically with their colleagues, adjust or change questions, make decisions that steer the course of the project work and set concrete milestones to approach the desired goal. This enables them to develop independent and structured working methods. Regular reflections on theoretical knowledge in light of experiences gained from practical implementation, enables students to make explicit, and internalise, the learning process. Working in interdisciplinary teams is a core element of the course. It requires a high degree of independence and promotes both organisational and communication skills.
Service Learning Track: In addition to the joint learning outcomes, the Service Learning Track also emphasises problem-solving skills in relation to specific practical issues. The participating students learn to understand the practical partner's project, to form their own opinion and develop concrete and contextual implementation options.
Start-up Track: In addition to the joint learning outcomes, the Start-up Track also focuses on problem-solving skills in developing an idea and realising it. Participating students individually address a social, ecological or socio-ecological problem they face and develop their own solutions for it.
