Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar deals with the spatial dimension of innovations for tackling grand societal challenges (climate change, digitalization, migration, demographic change, etc.). Special attention will be given to the following topics:

-) Explanation of the generation and diffusion of radical and disruptive innovations
-) Identification of actors, mechanisms and pathways of changes of socio-technical systems
-) Legitimization and forms of new regional and supra-regional policy approaches to promote system innovations

The course is a literature seminar. The literature will be provided by the lecturer. However, the students are supposed to conduct own searches on their specific topics.

Assessment and permitted materials

-Seminar paper (50%)
-Presentation and defense of the seminar paper (30%)
-Presence and contributions to the discussions in the classroom (20%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Learning outcomes: On completion of the course the students shall be able to
-offer explanations about driving forces for and barriers to radical innovations and new socio-technic development paths from a geographical perspective,
-assess opportunities for and limits of policy actors at various spatial scales to shape innovation and socio-technical transformation processes;
-write, present and defend a seminar paper

-Critical reflection on and discussion of conceptual and empirical contributions to the literature;
-Seminar paper
-Presentation and defense of seminar paper
