Aims, contents and method of the course
Topic of the seminar are distribution problems, paricularly the national and international inequalities of income and wealth. The seminar papers are related to income and capital, the dynamics of the wealth-income-ratio, the structure of inequality, the regulation of the capital in the 21st century and alternative economic systems. As a goal of economic policy is a global, progressive property tax recommended. Among the economic systems are market and socialism, stock market socialism, Basic Income and social heritance as well as market economy with welfare state treated. The basic literature are two books, which are both published in 2014: Piketty, T., Das Kapital im 21. Jahrhundert, and Corneo, G., Bessere Welt. If necessary . these books can be partly supllemented with Stiglitz, J., Der Preis der Ungleichheit (2012).
Assessment and permitted materials
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The intention oft he seminar ist the strengthening of skills to transform literature of economics into relatively short papers. Important is that the papers have a clear structure and understandable statements within a given volume. Further should the capability of discussion be improved. The topic is globalization and distribution. It should be shown the negative consequences of globalization and inequality of income and wealth. Additionally there will be alternative strategies and concepts for a fairer and less polarized economic distribution discussed. The basic literature are two books by Joseph Stiglitz: "Die Chancen der Globalisierung" (2006) and "Der Preis der Ungleichheit" (2012). The students should write seminar papers and give long as well as short presentations. These exercises are the basis for grade.
