Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Content: Public space is selected as the theoretical framework of current questions and topics in cities. Growing cities, like Vienna itself, are confronted with diverse challenges and conflicts, which are taking place in public space. Questions of local supply, green space, retail, traffic, actors, vacancy and physical furnishing are being raised. In this course, potentials as well as limitations of public space will be analyzed, whereas the interface between public and private space will be one of the main topics for discussion.Aims: The aim of this course is to rationally choose among various qualitative and quantitative methods of urban research with regard to a specific topic, as well as to define research questions and answering them. After successfully completing the course participants have an understanding for the processes of research projects within the field of urban research. Methods: After a short introduction into the topic of “Public Space” as well as qualitative and quantitative methods of urban research, small research projects will be carried out by student groups. The course is based on lectures and workshops, where active participation in the discussion is required. Main emphasis is placed on field research, where participants will get to know how to work directly in public space. Herewith methods and skills of project planning, data collection and analysis, interpretation and presentation of the findings are being improved. A general understanding of applied urban geography is the focus of the didactic concept of this course.
