Aims, contents and method of the course
After a short survey of national and international population developments basic demographic concepts and measures are introduced. These concepts will be dicussed for cohort and period measures. Demographic concepts like the Leslie matrix and life tables will be introduced and various projection techniques will be discussed. The lecture concludes with a survey of population models that explicitely take into account the age structure of populations.
Assessment and permitted materials
Continuous assessment via submissions of take home exercises and voluntary presentations of the homework plus written exam at the end of the term. Each part will be assessed separately. The overall grade is a weighted sum of the written exam (50%), the take home exercises (40%) and the oral presentations (10%).Attendance is compulsory, truancy is permitted only up to two times. Up to two take home exercises may be handed in later, but at latest by 28 Feb. 2018.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students are able to apply the methods to data and interpret and discuss results based on the methods and models presented in the course.
Examination topics
The course is structured around a lecture and practice exercises. The students solve take home exercise using Excel or discuss the methods studied in short essays (1-2 pages) followed by an oral presentation in the course.
