Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

1972 the Club of Rome presented the report “Limits of Growth”. It stated that an unlimited economic growth is impossible because the natural resources are limited. The report explicitly combines economy and ecology and started a discussion which last until today and is more topical than ever. 20 years later during the Earth Summit the “Rio Declaration on Environment and Development” was presented which contains 27 principles for a sustainable development on earth. Since then frequent summits about sustainable development, biodiversity, climate change etc. take place. Nevertheless environmental change, like climate change, increase of extreme events, loss of species etc., seems to take place like never before.

During the seminar selected topics are presented and it is discussed if and how politics and attitudes (individual, institutional and economical) has changed to evaluate if we are on a way to integrate economy and ecology for a sustainable development.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Aim is to critically discuss and challenge current topics in physical geography and environmental planning and to present the results in written and oral form.

Each topic will be presented by a student or two students (depended on the number of participants). In each session one student/group will present one side of the topic, and the other student/group will present an opposing argument. Group A will present for 30 minutes, group B will present for 30 minutes, group A is then allowed a 5 minute rebuttal, and group B a 5 minute rebuttal. Then both groups stand at the front and answer critical questions from the audience.
