Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Taking a Viennese case study introduced during the course, students will learn and experiment in situ with four photography tools as a mean to collect data. The course will divided into four sessions each presenting a specific tool:
Session 1 Collecting first impressions through photography
Session 2 Looking for photography archives
Session3 Photography as a tool to document as place
Session 4 Photography-interview/elicitation

Each session will be organised as follow: we will start with theoretical background introducing the tool, its aim, advantages and limits. Students will then apply and test it in the field with the teacher. Students will also be required to test it further on their own (part of the evaluation). Students will then present in the classroom their first results and analysis.
Students will be working alone and in group of 3 or 4 max.

The language of the course will be English.
Students should be proficient in English (oral and writing) and be familiar with qualitative methods and conducting fieldwork.

Assessment and permitted materials

Data collection and critical analysis will be part of the course evaluation. Evaluation will be done after each session with a small document to hand in gathering data and analysis of the session. A final document and presentation compiling the whole data collection, analysis and final results will be asked at the end of the course.
Part of the work will be done individually and in group.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim of the course is to introduce students with new methodological tools for qualitative research in urban studies and geography. The class is framed to 1) have students experiment with the challenges of new tools while collecting data in situ; 2) get familiar with a new dimension of qualitative research while at the same time developing a critical approach on new tools; 3) come up with new perspectives on their personal research project.
