Aims, contents and method of the course

Competences to be achieved: knowledge about specific development paths and in-depth knowledge on specific trends in urban development in SEE. Critical reflexion of dominant theories on urban spaces from the viewpoint of the periphery.

The lecture cum assignments has two sections:
(1) general sections, introducing the specificities of SEE, the historical city of the 19th and early 20th century, the socialist and the post-socialist city. In this section, general topics on urban development will be debated on the basis of compulsory literature.
(2) In debth analysis on current challenges of urban development: investor-led urban development, especially mean-projects and gated communities, informal vs. controlled suburbanization/urban sprawl, urban infrastructure, brownfield conversion, transformation into a service economy.
Methods: discussion of cumpulsory literature, literature review, development of a concept for the seminar work, presentation, seminar work

Assessment and permitted materials

written paper (20-30 pages) and oral presentation, participation in discussions and distance learning

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Presence with a maximum of 2x unexplained absence (= 2 units of 2 hours each);
Basis for assessment: oral presentation 30%, paper 40%, discussion 30%.
