Aims, contents and method of the course

It is the goal of the introductory lecture to familiarise students with important concepts, ideas and methods of landscape ecology. System theoretical concepts of landscapes will be covered as well as controls of spatial and temporal variability of landscapes. Additionally, quantitative concepts to describe landscape structure and matter cycling on the landscape scale will be presented. Finally, the lecture treats socio-scientific contents of landscape ecology and an outlook on landscape analysis and evaluation.
There are no prerequisites for participation for this introductory lecture, although basic knowledge of geomorphology, climatology and hydrology is useful. A written exam concludes the course.
