Seminar (Human Geography): Intercommunal Cooperation - Between Necessity and Rejection

Considering the present general conditions caused by glocalisation and postfordistic location dynamics, the regional level of planning is growing more and more important for the steering of land use systems and for initiatives of development policy. Regional planning, relating first of all to core cities and their suburban areas (core regions), must be considered a "task of national significance". Its tangible implementation, however, requires a high degree of intercommunal cooperation. In the seminar we shall get to the bottom of the question why such projects of cooperation are often doomed to fail or are rejected from the very beginning. The reasons for these attitudes shall be investigated by concrete examples in the German-speaking area. "Regional governance" and regional retail concepts are further items of the syllabus. Theories and concepts of political economy shall help to analyse the reasons for the failure of cooperation.
