Development, Structure and Transition of Peripheries in the Eastern Region of Austria

Based on the concept of a modern regional geography this lecture reveals information concerning the question how peripheries in the Eastern region of Austria came into being. Specific examples will help to understand the overall development process. The discussion of minor intitiatives contributing to overcoming structural deficits will support a more specific understanding. A main issue will concentrate on the results of of the EU funding strategies and another issue will highlight the effects of borders and will - as a consequence - discuss the question if peripheral regions can be defined as constructive counterparts of urbanised regions. Summing all up, this lecture will provide insights into East Austrian regions in transition to make a first evaluation of specific development potentials possible.
