Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We will take a look at the potential of actual 3D-software in respect of cartographic visualization. Forms of 3D-animation by the use of professional animation-tools (CGI-Movies, e.g. in order to produce high-quality computer generated video sequences) will be compared to the potentials given by (interactive) web-3d-technologies (WebGL, JavaScript), designed for real time-visualization. These issues shall be demonstrated and applied in practice.

After an explanation of the basics, the practical implementation is demonstrated to the students step by step using simple examples. Variations as well as similar tasks are to be carried out independently both during the course and as an exercise until the next unit in order to deepen what has been learned. The knowledge and competences gained in the course are to be applied in a final project.

After successful completion of the course students should have
- knowledge of the basics of creating 3D animations and interactive 3D applications in WebGL/JavaScript
- as well as competences to implement high-quality 3D animations and interactive 3D applications.

Methods: Interactive teaching, practical work with special software, teamwork and group-oriented learning as well as discussions, students' individual contributions (exercises/project work).

Assessment and permitted materials

Exercises, preparation of theoretical content for the following session, semester project in small groups, presentations, participation and oral questions on the content of the previous sessions.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The grade consists of participation (20%), submitted work (30%) and the final project (50%).

A total of at least 51% is required for a positive assessment.

A withdrawal is possible until the 3rd session of the PS. All remaining registered students will be issued a certificate by November of the winter semester at the latest - based on their performance up to that point. In principle, attendance is compulsory! A maximum of 2 classes may be missed.
