Soft Computing in GIS/RS - Managng Uncertain Knowledge

Managing uncertain data and knowledge is considered a core issue in state-of-the-art Geoinformation Systems and remote sensing. Sources of erroneous data are lack of data or knowledge on complex phenomena among others in geographic pattern recoginition. Soft Computing is based on logical extensions which adequately address these issues. Tools are presented in this seminar bridging the gap between the binary characteristics of GIS/RS data requirements and the semantics of classifcations. Results of using different methods in managing uncertainty are compared and evaluated in extensive GIS oriented lab exercises.
Based on a sound methodological expertise on working with uncertain data, most fuzzy logic driven applications will be designed for desktop GIS and image processing systems in class. Due to a twofold approach including both lectures and lab exercises, students will be able to develop and work on a project focusing on uncertain knowledge in geographic pattern analysis.
