Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is designed as an introductory class to the "Applied Geomorphology" concentration under the Master of Science in "Theoretical and Applied Geography". Its main objective is to demonstrate the utility of geomorphological principles in applied and planning situations. Lectures will focus on the following four themes: (1) influence of landform processes upon human activity, (2) consequences of resource management strategies on sediment mobilization within the landscape, (3) identification and mitigation of natural hazards, (4) the role of geomorphic process studies in environmental planning. Case studies to exemplify the four themes will be drawn from biomes and urban settings in every continent.

Lecture material: relevant materials will be provided on a class website.
Nature of examination: written examination based on lectures; class attendance essential!
