Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is to identify the variety of geo-oriented tasks and the overlapping of the boundaries between maps, map-related illustrations, graphics and images as well as to convey the potential of cartographic visualizations.
The course focuses on the methods of cartographic visualization of thematic issues as well as aspects of the design of cartographic products. The diversity of applications is shown through a wide range of examples. A critical approach to cartographic products is conveyed through map analysis. In the same way students are taught critical analysis of cartographic products and awareness is created for user appropriate display.
Different approaches for an independent map design will be taught, formalized and put into practice in group work.
The tension in map production between - accuracy - aesthetics - efficiency - is conveyed.
