Aims, contents and method of the course

Beside the physical geographic background in Sub-Saharan Africa the political and economical frames are presented, which are necesarry to understand land use. But the main focus is definitely on the natural scientific part of the topic. Against the ecological background land use forms will be discussed and possible developments in the context of global change will be disputed. Land use is not only agrarian utilisation and extraction of primary products but also the touristical capitalization and climate protection projects. Selected case studies add to illustrations related to the whole subcontinent.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim is to:
- teach the basic of physical and human geography in Subsaharan Africa
- to show the interrelations of various parameters on the agroecology and the utilisation of resources
- to examplify aspects of development geography in Subsaharan Africa
