Aims, contents and method of the course

During the last years the Department of Geography and Regional Research of the University of Vienna has established a focus on Asian Studies which is mainly addressing aspects of demographic, economic, socio-cultural and political transformation processes in the region. Among Human Geographers working in these fields one can observer a growing need and interest in employing qualitative research methods.
The teaching units of this course consist of lectures and discussions to provide an overview of various forms and criteria qualitative research methods. Within the scope of small research projects students explore selected aspects of Asian Communities in Vienna ("ethnic" business, student migration, marriage migration, creative industries, religious institutions, Asian Tourism).).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

: It is the aim of this course to provide an overview of qualitative research approaches and tools such as different forms of interviews and observations while stressing aspects and problems which are occurring in the context of Southeast Asian studies.

Examination topics

Within the scope of small research projects students explore selected aspects of Asian Communities in Vienna. Students will apply and operationalize the introduced research methods. Beginning with a frame topic students develop research questions, a research design and carry out the fieldwork.
