Aims, contents and method of the course

The course "Applied Urban Geography" is aimed at applying theoretical concepts and questions of research in urban geography according to the contents presented in the lecture "Urban Geography". A specific issue of urban geography will be selected and transformed into an applied research project. As a result, the project should provide new findings on the selected topic of urban geography. By realizing this research project, the participants will acquire skills necessary for developing questions of research as well as for planning and conducting research projects in urban geography. This subject additionally comprises methods of selecting adequate indicators and collecting data samples. Improving skills at the selection and application of appropriate methods of data analysis and the interpretation of the results are further issues of the didactic concept of this course. Following especially designed guidelines participants will work independently on developing and carrying out their individual research projects. The results will be presented in class and summarized in a final report.

Assessment and permitted materials

Der positive Abschluss die Lehrveranstaltung setzt sich zusammen aus:
• Anwesenheit + aktive Mitgestaltung der Workshops und Diskussionen (10%)
• Arbeitsaufgaben (10%)
• Abschlusspräsentation (Gruppenarbeit) 30%
• Abschlussarbeit (Gruppenarbeit) 50%

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In diesem Kurs sollen die Studierenden ein Grundverständnis für forschungslogische Abläufe
entwickeln sowie Einblicke und praktische Erfahrung im Feld der Stadtforschung erhalten.
Aktuelle Fragen der Stadtforschung werden gemeinsam mit den Studiereden bearbeitet.
• Einführung in den Themenkomplex öffentlicher urbaner Raum
• Einführung in qualitative und quantitative Methoden der Stadtraumanalyse
• Anwendung qualitative und quantitative Methoden der Stadtraumanalyse anhand von
Forschungsprojekten

Examination topics

Die Lehrveranstaltung baut einerseits auf Vorlesungen auf, welche als Einleitung und Einführung in die Thematik des öffentlichen urbanen Raums dienen, andererseits wird die Lehrveranstaltung in einem Workshop-Charakter gehalten wobei die Studierenden in Gruppen ihre Forschungsprozesse und die Forschungsergebnisse erarbeiten und präsentieren.
Die Studierenden entwickeln so in kleinen Arbeitsgruppen eigenständig Forschungsprojekte und lernen verschiedene Methoden wie Projektplanung, Datengewinnung, Analyse, Interpretation und Präsentation der Forschungsergebnisse.

Die Inhalte werden auf Moodle zur Verfügung gestellt. Literatur wird in der Einführungsvorlesung bekannt gegeben bzw. ebenfalls auf Moodle zur Verfügung gestellt.
