Field Trip: Recent Issues of Urban Planning in Vienna: Urban Development, Urban Renewal and Urban Decay
The purpose of the Excursion is to present recent problems of urban development in Vienna and to integrate them into more general concepts and theories of urban geography. In this context the concept of the excursion is to reveal where and how problems of urban development become visible in the urban fabric of Vienna. The issues of urban development that will be discussed in greater detail focus on re-structuring and dynamics in the historic city center, urban renewal and strategies of re-development of urban brownfield and greyfield areas, social and ethnic segregation, planning and development of new urban centers, social housing, urban recreational areas, marketing the urban culture and, finally, shopping and retailing in the city. The topics discussed during the excursion will be prepared by the participants and presented in the course of a one-day field trip. The individual topics will be discussed on selected sites, where they become visible in the urban fabric. The results of the issues of urban development in Vienna examined during this day will be summarized and presented in a final report.
