Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course deals with the theoretical and practical aspects of crime mapping and spatial analysis of crime. In the US, this topic has become increasingly important in the last five to ten years because of the increase in law enforcement agencies that are using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and crime mapping. In order to fill this need, universities and community colleges have begun to provide education and training in crime mapping and spatial analysis. This could be the first course on this topic ever to be taught at a university in the German-speaking countries of Europe.
The following topics will be discussed in more detail:
1. Criminology theories and concepts in the spatial distribution of crimes
2. Data and technology
3. Methods of the spatial analysis of crime
4. "Criminal Geographic Profiling" or how to find the residence of a serial offender
5. Spatial crime analysis in the US compared to Austria
6. Current research topics
Basic knowledge in statistics and GIS is helpful but not required.
