Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course is designed for bachelor students in their fourth semester. It aims at creating basic knowledge in conceptual methodology and empirical applicability of selected quantitative methods and models specifically used in and designed for regional analysis. Basic knowledge in statistics and in the use of the computer programs EXCEL, SPSS and ArcView is presumed. Central themes of the course: construction and interpretation of simple and complex regional indicators, shift-share-analysis, input-output-analysis, graph theory, spatial models, interaction models, spatial autocorrelation, regional classification and regionalisation.
Assessment and permitted materials
Requirements for graduation are: (1) regular attendance in lecture and exercise sessions, (2) active involvement in discussions over the course, (3) timely hand over of written papers with results for the shift-share-analysis as well as the interaction model analysis and (4) positive assessment of a written exam at the end of the course.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Examination topics
Main parts of the course will be held in lecture room II (NIG) Monday 9.45-11.15 am. Small preparatory respectively postprocessing exercises shall provide the basis for active involvement in different lecture units. In the course of the semester each student has to run a shift-share-analysis as well as an interaction model analysis on his/her own. Two exercise courses (15.4. and 13.5.) and two tutorial sessions (22.4. and 27.5.) will take place in computer room B, NIG, EG. Students are divided in three groups for exercises and tutorials.
