Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course deals with specific methods and models relevant in quantitative regional analysis: regional indices, regional classification, shift-share-models, input-output-models, graph theory, spatial interaction models, join-count-statistics, spatial autocorrelation.
The course is designed for bachelor students in their fourth semester. Basic knowledge in statistics and in the use of the computer programs EXCEL and SPSS is presumed.

Assessment and permitted materials

Requirements for graduation are: (1) regular attendance, (2) timely hand over of written papers with results for the shift-share-analysis as well as the interaction model analysis and (3) positive assessment of at least two of four tests.
Credit scheme: tests in sum 54, written papers in sum 34, small exercises in sum 10. A minimum of 51/100 credit points is required for positive examination.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course aims at creating basic knowledge in conceptual methodology and empirical applicability of selected quantitative methods and models specifically used in and designed for regional analysis. Students are able to (i) explain basic mathematical-statistical structure of the different methods/models, (ii) interpret empirical results of the methods/models, (iii) characterize typical applications and (iv) calculate regional indices, shift-share-factors and spatial potential figures with Excel and SPSS.

Examination topics

Main parts of the course will be held in lecture room 4C Monday 10.00-12.00 am.
In the course of the semester each student has to run a shift-share-analysis as well as an interaction model analysis on his/her own. Training for these exercises will take place in computer room B (ZID, NIG, EG) in exercise courses (31.3. and 12.5.) and tutorial sessions (7.4. and 19.5.) Students are divided in two groups for exercises and tutorials.
