Aims, contents and method of the course

In this lecture, theoretical concepts of human geography are addressed by implementing concrete research projects. Students will be guided to develop their own empirical work on current research questions in human geography (development of research design and methodology, implementation, presentation of results) in small groups.

The general topic of the course (innovation-based transformations of the mobility sector) is conceptualized, operationalized and implemented together with the students using different empirical methods (mental maps, observation, document analysis, evaluation of secondary data).

The final presentation of results will take place in an interactive workshop format.

Assessment and permitted materials

Homework/reading tasks (individual work, literature on current research questions and theory)
Planning and conduction of empirical work (empirical survey, optional mapping / survey, observation and / or secondary data analysis)
presentation of results

Compulsory attendance (1 unit can be missed), active participation

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance and individual work task (15%)
empirical work in small groups (55%)
presentation of results (30%)

Translocality and spatial practice in Vienna

This course explores local productions of space that arise through transnational networks, interrelations and interactions in situ.
The students will work on the development of a research design and methodology, its implementation and the presentation of results. In the course, specific subtopics (migrant place-making, ethnic entrepreneurship and organizational forms and functions of migrant associations and organizations) are worked out, operationalized and implemented with the students using various methods.

Assessment and permitted materials

Processing of 2 work tasks (individual work; literature on current research questions and theory)
planning and implementation of group work (empirical survey) presentation of results obligation to attend (max. 1 unit can be missed),
participation in the exercise units.

Aims, contents and method of the course

Climate protection and adaption to climate change in rural areas – Potentials and chances
This course aims to identify development potentials for rural areas resulting from climate protection measures and strategies for climate change adaption. The focus will be on aspects such as process analysis (success factors, challenges), transferability to other regions and the economic added value. By means of various methods, concrete subtopics (lighthouse projects in the field of energy transition, regional economic effects due to energy transition – focus on eco-energy tourism, village and urban renewal under the aspect of climate change adaption) will be developed, operationalized and realized in this course (mind maps, observation and mapping, expert interviews, analysis of documents, analysis of secondary data).

Topic: The rural area - future living space?
Students work in teams on there ideas of a future living space in a rural area. They focus on its value, its tasks, trends, quality of life and its appearance. Students inform themselves in advance about the present situation of rural areas. They will be practising in a Living Lab using a method called Design Thinking.

Assessment and permitted materials

team-presentations of the results to a professional jury, individual work: summary of the literature offered (1 page), active participation in the Living Lab, presence in kick-off and in the field (Steinbach a. d. Steyr/Upper Austria)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
