Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The general aim is to deepen and extend the basic methods that have been lectured in UA I and UA II in order to provide a comprehensive and complete understanding of key methods.
Additionally, reflective thinking and a culture of constructive discussion will be continued as core elements of the course. To achieve this objective, we will provide on the one hand a well-balanced combination of lecture sessions, practical teamwork, field-work and presentations. On the other hand we will motivate the students to participate in a reading group where currently relevant literature will be discussed on a regular basis.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance, cooperation, complete assignments, presentation of research results and a final exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students shall be able to define a question of research and analyze it by an appropriate set of quantitative and qualitative methods. The students are enabled to visualize spatial patterns.

Examination topics

In UA III we add more specific and advanced methods: Text and discourse analysis, repetition of semi-structured interviews, field-test questionnaire surveys (if requested), participant observation, statistical methods, basic methods in cartography
