Aims, contents and method of the course

This bachelor's seminar in human geography focuses on the examination of fundamental human geography perspective and questions from the field of human-environment research and development research. Students will independently plan and write a seminar paper and bring the most important findings from it to the seminar.

The thematic focus of this seminar is:
- Geographical social research in the ‘global south’
- Human-environment relations
- Population geography and human mobility
- Urban spaces in the context of globalisation

Language of the course is English and German!

Learning objectives:
In the course of the bachelor seminar, participants will:
- Learn to research, analyse and discuss international literature
- Create a concept for a presentation topic
- Give a scientific presentation in the seminar...
- ... and write a seminar paper based on it

Assessment and permitted materials

60% Term paper/ Homework
40% Group work/presentation

Note on plagiarism and Large Language Models (LLMs):

Plagiarism is the presentation of someone else’s work as your own and will be penalized in accordance with university rules and practices. If you are unsure what constitutes plagiarism or how to cite properly, please seek guidance from your instructor.
LLMs, such as "ChatGPT" are a potentially useful technology. Students are welcome to use any technology that helps the learning process, including LLMs, as long as they do so responsibly and ethically. Students should, however, be aware of the limitations of these tools. It is ethical to ask LLMs to help refine existing student-generated work. It is not ethical to ask LLMs to generate original works and to pretend that it was done by the student. Students should know that work produced by LLMs is often of sub-par quality and often include made-up facts. Students will be held responsible for the quality of the work they turn in, regardless of the tools being used.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

100 - 87,5 % - grade 1
87,5 - 75 % - grade 2
75 - 62,5 % - grade 3
62,5 - 50 % - grade 4
less than 50% - grade 5

Assignments have to be passed individually. An assignment is passed with a minimum grade of 4.

Examination topics

The examination will encompass the work items as outlined in the course requirements.
