Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course conveys basic principles of (carto-)graphic design as well as a critical examination of cartographic products. The participants shall grasp the relevance of cartographic visualization of thematic contents. Furthermore, they shall get knowledge about the various forms of expression and methods available for the representation of spatial phenomena within geography and cartography and how to use them accordingly. Lessons learned, like the application of cartography and geocommunication in the information society as well as working in a team are to be seen as important cornerstones.
This course expands and deepens knowledge gained during the introduction courses (Einführung in die Kartographie). Important terms, concepts, methods of cartography, geocommunication and web cartography will be explained. Methodological and practical approaches will be discussed and applied in the course of practical works.
One part of the course teaches theoretical content. The second part focuses on practical applications realized in teamwork. The results will be presented in a final presentation.
The course is held in German!

Assessment and permitted materials

Overall assessment is divided in two partial assessments
1. Exam. This exam is held as computer multiple choice test. Exam topics include theoretical content of the course. Each student is graded individually. No materials are permitted
2. Practical team work. The practical tasks are conducted as team homework. The results will be presented at the end of the course. The group will be graded as whole.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Prerequisite for the graduation of the course is the attendance during the courses as well as the participation at the two assessments.
Attendance: Attendance during the course units as well as on one of the two days of presentation (all day) is mandatory
Assessment: Both partial assessments are graded from 0 to 100%. For the final grade, a mean is determined from these grades. To pass the course, a minimum mean of 50% is required.
Course and assessments are held in German!
