Aims, contents and method of the course

Risk in natural hazard research - approaches, methodologies and limitations
Objectives: Understanding of the basic principles in risk research, application in natural hazard research and critical discussion about risk assessment and risk management.
Content of the lecture: Definition and origin of the risk term in a multi-disciplinary matter, risk concept in natural hazard research, risk analysis, risk evaluation, risk management, risk communication, practical application and case studies, risk in settlements and road networks, temporal development of risk, possible limitations of meaningfulness and dealing with uncertainties.
Apart from the lectures, the students should have a critical look at the relevant literature.
