Introduction to Time Series Analysis
The course is designed for advanced students of all study programmes in geography. The methods taught are relevant for the analysis of socioeconomic as well physical time series.
Main targets are (1) the development of a basic understanding of the compounded nature of time series, (2) acquaintance with different methods to decompose time series and to analyse the different components, (3) knowledge how to use the statistical package SPSS for time series analysis.
The course is held every two weeks on Thursday 9-12.00 in the computing classroom 2 of the campus. All steps in the analysis will be discussed with respect to their realisation in SPSS. Regional time series of unemployment rates in Austria will be the relevant real data base for training. However, up to the end of the course each student will have to produce an analysis of a time series of her/his own choice. Work in the course will be supported by a tutor.
