The date in March relates to a preparatory meeting. Attendance is mandatory, because we need to allocate groups to the light-trapping dates. On 27th March there will be an additional (mandatory) preparatory seminar, on the basics of light-trapping methodology and an introduction into the diversity of moth taxa occurring in Austria. Venue: Lecture hall Rennweg 14.
Light-trapping will be conducted at roughly monthly intervals near Orth/Donau. I plan the following slots: 02./03.04.; 30.04./01.05.; 10./11.06.; 23./24.07.; and 12./13.08. Depending on weather conditions, changes may become necessary on short notice! At each slot only a subset of students (3-4 persons) may participate. Elaborations on our samples (= i.e. species-level identifications) will follow in the course week from 18. to 22.08.2025.

Aims, contents and method of the course

Overview of the diversity of Central European macro-moths (including Pyraloidea), based on own field work, light-trap catches and subsequent species-level identification. During the months April to August, light trap samples will be taken in small subgroups in the field. Subsequently, we will identfy species using morphological characters, using a wide variety of special monographs and web-based repositories. NOTE: this course (bi-annual schedule) is likely offered in SS2025 for the last time.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation in the field (at least in one sampling excursion to Orth, NP Donau-Auen) and during evaluation of the samples (maximum 1 day of absence). A written essay (c. 5-8 pages DINA4) has to be submitted on a topic related to moth ecology and evolution (individual topics will be distributed among participants after the first meeting). It is expected that for all topics also primary scientific literature is evaluated, besides internet sources, book chapters, monographs etc. A full documentation of all utilized sources as citations is mandatory. Finally, an annotated species list of the light-trap catch is required from the date each student has actively participated in.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participation in field (10 %), participation in sample evaluation (30 %), written essay and annotated species list (60 %). Submitting only the essay is NOT sufficient to pass this course.
