Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Living with conspecifics seems to be the default option in vertebrates; the basic neuronal and physiological structures and functions were conservatively maintained from the advent of gnathostome fishes till today, over at least 450 mio years of Phylogeny. In the homoeothermic vertebrate phyla (birds and mammals) we see an increasing role of cognitive mechanisms in decision making and impulse control and vice versa, social complexity became an important driver of big and able brains. The course will start with an overview over the patterns of social systems in animals including humans and will mainly concentrate to the on the structures and Mechanisms employed in sociality.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written exam (max. 60 min), with 5-6 questions (no multiple choice), resulting in max. 10 points per question. At least one of the questions refers to the papers discussed during the course. The date of the first exam (approx. 1 week after the end of the course) will be discussed in the course.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Aims are to provide evolutionary explanations for living together and to integrate evolutionary functions with proximate mechanisms.
Examination topics
Ppt presentation (will be made available via moodle), discussions, integration of scholarly key peer review publications.
