Aims, contents and method of the course

The training course is given in the experimental garden Augarten, where an intensive training is offered to study horticultural techniques together with experiments to elucidate the physiological background. Focal points are: germination / allelopathy, grafting (auto-, homo-, heterograft, transplantation), rooting of cuttings (as influenced by storage compounds, light, temperature, nutrients and phytohormones like IEA, IBA and NAA), regeneration from plant organs( complete, partial), apical dominance / bud formation, vegetative / generative growth, effects of phyto - hormones / phyto - effectors (e.g. auxines, morphactine, gibberellinic acid, CCC), soil characteristics ( structure, ion-adsorption, pH, nutrient content, field methods), fertilisation trials (indoor plants, field crops), foil greenhouse (tunnel) / climate, vegetable garden (intercropping - chronological / spatial), cultivation of indoor plants (in relation to the natural habitat), air condition by plants, bottle garden (Wardian cages), growth analysis, plants of the season, excursions to ecologically beneficial farms, crop diversity, winegrowing, food industry.

Assessment and permitted materials

collaboration of students, examination of knowledge, short coursework, evaluation of experiments

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students should learn to work autonomous to cope with ecological taks, especially in breeding and propagating of plants.

Examination topics

The course deals with plant physiological principals and methods used in nursery and horticulture. Practical examples were conducted in small groups. Results were evaluated and presented. Excursions impart further knowledge.
