Aims, contents and method of the course

Most modern scientific communication is in English. This course will guide students through the processes of finding, reading, and understanding scientific papers in English. Students will practice writing and speaking about scientific research in a weekly seminar meeting.
Course activities will include online literature searching, reading scientific papers, understanding the reasoning and logic in a scientific presentation, writing various kinds of research reports, and informal speaking on topics from the literature.

Assessment and permitted materials

Based on attendance and participation, and small writing and speaking assignments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To introduce the processes of finding, reading, and understanding scientific papers in English, and to prepare students to write their own research reports.

Examination topics

Lecture with small-group discussions and individual participation. Writing assignments with individual feedback.

Reading list

Readings will be assigned each week.
